190 Trapelo Rd Redevelopment

Welcome to 190Trapelo.com. A simple, informational site about the redevelopment history of the former Walter E. Fernald Development Center. The goal is to provide information, timelines, drive communication, and quell rumors and misinformation. There is A LOT to read about this property. Please see the links at the very top, above the header photo of Baldwin Pond, to navigate the site (if on a mobile device, hit the three dashes in the top left for the menu). In an effort to keep this site evergreen, it will always be a work in progress.

Waltham taxpayers purchased the property from the state on December 23, 2014. The property has a storied history filled with abuse and mistreatment under the state's oversight. The last resident moved out in 2014. Waltham recognizes the history of 190 Trapelo and has invested heavily to redefine the property and inject happiness, healing and include something for people of all abilities and all ages. The property was purchased partially with CPA and general funds for recreation, open space and historical preservation.

Waltham is redeveloping the site with a universal playground (the largest in New England), a memorial and reflection area (with educational and dedication signage and guides, monuments, seating areas) recreation amenities, shade pavilions, trails, playing fields, mini-golf, a splash pad, a braille trail, new landscaping and trees.

Please check this site often as it is being updated frequently. On the links page, the bid documents for several buildings available for lease for housing and services are available. The bid document for the current construction is HERE. This includes all details for what is being built on parcel 2A-1 (photo on the left).

Respectfully, Bill Hanley, City Councilor, Ward 3.
